Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom, so it can be sanded and refinished several times over its life. It needs a wood subfloor to nail into, which suits most Toronto houses with plywood or plank subfloors over joists. It is not the right choice for basements or directly over concrete slabs. For those spaces we recommend engineered hardwood instead.

We measure every room and take moisture readings of the subfloor and the delivered boards.
The hardwood sits in your home before install so it adjusts to your indoor conditions.
Loose sheathing gets screwed down and high or low spots are corrected.
Boards are racked out, nailed down, and trimmed with baseboard or quarter round.
Before the first board goes down, we walk the house with a moisture meter and a straightedge. We note which way the joists run, because solid strip flooring is laid across them. We measure the plywood or plank sheathing; the Ontario Building Code calls for at least 15.5 mm plywood on joists up to 500 mm apart, or 12.5 mm under 19 mm strip hardwood laid across the joists, and thin or loose sheathing is fastened or overlaid first. We check heights at stairs, tile thresholds and exterior doors, and mark floor vents so they are cut in cleanly. These notes go into your written quote.
Run a humidifier in winter and air conditioning in summer to limit gaps and cupping.

Not directly. Most solid hardwood is made to be nailed to a wood subfloor, and few products are approved by their makers for a concrete slab. Over concrete we install engineered hardwood instead.
It depends on the manufacturer and the moisture readings. We follow the manufacturer's instructions and start once the boards are within the specified range of the subfloor.
Prefinished boards install faster with no sanding dust or finish fumes. Site-finished floors are sanded flat after install and get a seamless finish in the stain colour you choose.
We match species, board width and direction, then blend the stain on site. Red oak strip flooring is a frequent match in older Toronto houses.
