Why Toronto tile installation needs a stiff, flat base

Ceramic and porcelain tile crack when the floor under them bends. The TCNA sets L/360 as the deflection limit for ceramic and porcelain over wood framing, and L/720 for natural stone. In older Toronto houses we check joist span and subfloor thickness, add plywood where needed, then install an uncoupling membrane. Tile is set in thinset with the coverage ANSI A108 calls for (at least 80% contact in dry areas and 95% in wet areas), and large-format tile gets a levelling system to control lippage at the edges.

Grout and tile care after tile installation in Toronto

Tile needs little care, but grout does. Cement grout is porous, so we recommend sealing it once it has cured and resealing as the product directs. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner, because acidic and bleach products break down grout and sealer over time. In Toronto entries, road salt dries into a white film on tile and grout each winter, so mop with plain warm water more often from December to March. Keep a few spare tiles from your order in case one cracks, since production lots change and an exact match can be hard to find later.

Why does floor tile crack in older Toronto houses?

Common causes of cracked tile are a floor that bends too much and tile set without enough thinset coverage. We check deflection against L/360 and add plywood or an uncoupling membrane before tiling.

Can you add a heated floor under new tile in Toronto?

Yes. An electric heated floor mat runs $8 – $15 per sq ft and sits in the thinset under the tile. An electrician connects it to the thermostat and panel.

Can new tile go over old vinyl tiles in a Toronto home?
