What flooring installation includes

Toronto flooring installation starts under the floor

Every flooring installation starts with the subfloor. We screw down loose plywood or OSB, grind high spots, fill low spots with self-levelling compound and take moisture readings on wood and concrete. Then the floor goes in the way its maker specifies: click-lock planks float over underlay, engineered boards are glued or nailed, solid hardwood is nailed to the subfloor, tile is set in thinset and carpet is stretched over pad onto tack strip. Baseboard or quarter round goes back on at the end.

Engineered hardwood or vinyl plank over the acoustic underlay your building's rules call for. We book the elevator and follow the board's hours.

Basements

SPC vinyl plank or engineered hardwood over a moisture barrier. Solid hardwood does not go on concrete slabs.

Solid or engineered hardwood over re-fastened plywood, and tile in kitchens and baths over a stiff, flat subfloor.

Choose trim and transitions

Pick baseboard or quarter round, transition strips and stair nosing colours ahead of time so they arrive with the flooring.

Plan for appliances

The fridge, stove and washer are pulled out so the new floor runs under them. A gas appliance is disconnected by a gas technician before we arrive.

Set aside a cutting spot

We need space for saws close to the work, such as a garage, driveway or spare room. In a condo, the building names where cutting is allowed.

Start with the room, then pick the floor. Kitchens, entries and basements see water and winter salt, so vinyl plank or porcelain tile suits them. Bedrooms and living rooms can take solid or engineered hardwood, which can be sanded again later. Laminate costs less than wood and handles busy hallways when it carries an AC4 rating. In a condo, the building’s rules on acoustic underlay may narrow the list before you choose a colour. We bring samples, check the subfloor in each room and note door heights, since a thicker floor can mean trimming door bottoms.
