Carpet wears out from below as much as from above. We lay new pad over a clean, fastened subfloor, nail tack strip around the room with the right gap from the wall, then power-stretch the carpet onto the strip. Seams are hot-melt taped and placed along the light and away from doorways. In basements over concrete we glue the tack strip and use a pad suited to slab floors.

Nylon springs back in hallways and on stairs. Polyester is softer and suits bedrooms.
